Flotation Therapy

what is

Floating

When you step into your personal flotation pod, you won’t be fighting gravity.

The 1000+ pounds of epsom salt in the water supports you as you lie on your back. The water is kept at skin temperature, ~93.5 degrees, which means you lose track of where your body ends and the water begins. Your ears stay just below the water (with waterproof earplugs) and the rooms are insulated against sound, so noise from the outside world doesn’t reach you.

After you close the lid, you simply float. After 5-10 minutes, the lights and music will fade out, easing you into the remainder of your experience. For an hour, or more, the outside world is gone, and amazing things happen. It turns out that when you’re not fighting gravity or constantly taking in information, your body has a lot of extra resources at its disposal; your mind is able to unwind and flow freely without distraction, your brain pumps out dopamine and endorphins, and your body gets to rest, de-stress, and heal.

Benefits

Rigid postures and chronic muscular tension from daily life can cause ailments such as lower-back pain, neck pain, shallow breathing, high blood pressure, etc. The anti-gravity environment of the float tank relieves the pressure that is constant with chronic pain. Fibromyalgia, arthritis, back pain, neck pain, tendinitis, bursitis, inflammation and psychosomatic pain relief have all been documented via float therapy usage.

Floating suppresses the functioning of the sympathetic nervous system which, when active, produces our fight or flight response. Floatation activates the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for relaxation, healing, replenishment, and recovery. Some physical benefits of the relaxation response are decreased muscle tension, decreased blood pressure, decreased stress hormones, and increased endorphins.

All athletes know how much of a life-saver epsom salt can be for sore muscles. Think of floating like an epsom salt super bath! Alongside detoxing any extra lactic acid from your muscles, the zero-gravity environment will give your body the relaxation it needs to get right back to training.

Limiting light, sound, and touch can give you an inward experience unlike any other. Without any distractions, you’ll be able to discover what areas of your life need more focus and attention, what areas are no longer serving you, and what purpose you are feeling most called to fulfill.

Floating helps the mind achieve a theta state quickly. Theta waves are always creative, characterized by feelings of inspiration. It is believed that this mental state allows you to act below the level of the conscious mind, allowing you to ideate without hesitation.

Immune function is enhanced by suppressing stress hormones which not only weaken the immune system but also suppress the digestion and reproductive systems, affect regeneration processes, and decrease insulin sensitivities.

Before You Book

Your float session time represents the entire time in the service! Please allow an additional 30 minutes for showering before and after your session. For example, a 60 minute float will take about 90 minutes of your day.

  • ADD EVERYONE’S INFORMATION
If you are reserving more than one room, please make sure that you fill out the information for everyone in the party. It’s important our guests read the informative waiver before the visit.

  • SURPRISE VISITS
Floating is an amazing experience to share with a loved one, but probably not as a surprise. Not everyone is comfortable with getting their hair wet, or the idea of sensory deprivation. Please ask for a copy of our waiver before booking, so you can make sure everyone’s good to float first.
  • ARRIVAL
Arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment so we can get all that pesky paperwork out of the way and get you integrated with our space and everything you need to know about the process for an optimal experience.
  • Freshly colored hair: Wait two weeks before floating or until hair doesn’t stain a white towel.
  • For Keratin treated hair: In order to protect against the sulfates of Epsom Salt, saturating your hair with fresh water from the shower and then putting on a swim cap is the best protection. Some salty water will get into swim caps, but your hair will be much more protected this way.
  • You may experience a certain level of discomfort while floating if you shave or wax the same day before your appointment.
  • Eat a light meal 1-2 hours prior to your float, no angry belly monster sounds are needed.
  • If you wear contact lenses, make sure to bring a case and solution.
  • Swimsuits are not recommended. Your personal float suite is private and any clothing will create pressure points that may distract from the full experience.
  • Spray/Faux Tanning: Wait 5 days before you float.
  • Avoid caffeine before 2-4 hours before your float.
  • Reusable earplugs – take these home and use them on your dog, mowing neighbors, or spouse. Moldable waterproof earplugs and foam earplugs are available on request.
  • Makeup Remover wipe – may also be used as a refreshing face wipe.
  • Petroleum Jelly – to cover any scrapes or private areas that may sting from large amounts of Epsom Salt.
  • Comb – to look dapper alongside your post float glow.
  • Contact cases and solution are available on request. It is suggested to wear glasses instead.
  • Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body wash are provide in all float suites.
  • Showers are in each private float suite.
  • Hair dryers in our restroom.
  • A clean change of clothes – After you’ve floated, it’s so nice to slide into fresh, clean, comfortable clothes.
  • A hairbrush for long hair – Combs don’t work for us.
  • Reusable earplugs from previous floats! If you forget, we provide them, but if you can remember, we can reduce our impact together. Wash with warm, soapy water after each use.
  • A journal for all the thoughts you may wish to record after your session.
  • An open mind – floating is a new environment to everyone the first time; there is nothing else like it! It can take some adjustment. The less expectations you can bring, the more you will get out of it.

what to expect

The Process

When you arrive, we will show you into your private float suite and give you an overview of these basics. Before you enter the pod, you will shower with our pre-float wash to remove any oils and dirt from the skin. Next, put in your earplugs and cover any scrapes or cuts with petroleum jelly (again, all provided). Once your pod has filled, step in and close the lid.

Once you are in the pod, music and lights will ease you in while you get acquainted with the unique environment. After being settled for a while, the music and lights will fade out and let you relax completely free of distraction. Floating with all sensory inputs reduced to a minimum will allow your brain to start producing theta waves, the frequency of deep relaxation. People have reported discovering clarity on big decisions, writing full novels, and deep spiritual experiences. Your body will be suspended in a zero-gravity environment, freeing you from any tension and allowing your muscles to completely let go. Every float is different and that is why we encourage you to set an intention, and Drift on purpose.

Lights and music will fade in to ease you out of your float when your time is up. When you are ready to get out of the pod, lift the lid and step into the shower. After a full shower with shampoo, conditioner and body wash (provided), come rejoin the world and explore your heightened senses. If you would like to apply make up or dry your hair we also have a beauty bar available with hair dryers and other tools on-site. Add on 15-30 minutes at our oxygen bar, kick back in zero gravity and integrate before you head out.

Float Cabins

Our basic objective was to create a float center with comprehensive water cleaning and treatment system that allows numerous consecutive clients to use the sensory deprivation cabins in an impeccably hygienic and spotless environment.

The system provides unparalleled hygiene – thanks to our external water reservoir tank and our complex 4+1 steps water cleaning filtration system. The water cleaning system is the outcome of years of float cabin development with the help of a team of experts.

Before and after every client session the float cabins are emptied/drained and the total volume of water is cleaned and filtered twice using four different methods. The water regeneration process consists of chemical, physical and mechanical cleaning methods, achieving a perfect result. The cabin’s antibacterial material and the disinfection performed on the inner surface of the float cabin after each session provide a clean, safe environment for the perfect relaxation experience.

Flotation FAQS

If you have longer hair, you may want to bring a hair brush. Also, you may want to bring a case to put your contact lenses into while you’re floating. Other than that, we provide everything you need (towels, robes, earplugs, body wash/shampoo…) Since each room is fully private and you can lock the door, you go into the tank nude, there is no need to bring a bathing suit.

Don’t drink coffee for several hours beforehand (it can make your system jittery). Also, don’t shave or wax right before since the salt water can irritate your skin, like when you are at the beach. Eating a light meal about an hour to 90 minutes ahead of time stops your stomach from sounding like an angry monster while you float. Other than that, there’s no specific preparation needed.

You have the whole float suite to yourself, and you can get in or out at any time. You’re always in control of your environment, and people with extreme claustrophobia have reported having no problems with their time floating. Being in the cabins is more like floating in outer space than being shut in a box. With our float cabins, you can even leave the lid open at any angle so you never feel shut in!

Hygiene is our first priority and that is why we decided to invest in float cabins with an external water reservoir tank that is totally emptied from the salt water between each guest, hosed down and wiped clean! During this process every last drop of salty water is pumped through our 4 step water cleaning system, including Ozone, hydrogen peroxide, sand filter, and cartridge filter. We also use one more step periodically, using active carbon/charcoal for pristine water clarity.

Like a pickle covered in maple syrup, pregnant women love floating! There is even a special position you can float in that relieves all of the weight of the baby off of the mother’s body. If you are in your third trimester, or have any concerns, please consult with your physician before coming in.

If you can’t wash or get your head wet, you should bring a waterproof (e.g. silicone) swim cap, although be aware that no swim cap is perfect, and leaking is common around the ears and jaw!

While there is no guarantee that the salt won’t strip some color from your hair, we recommend that you check if the water running through your hair in the shower at home is fully clear. If there is still some color coming out you should wait a couple of more days/showers.

Yes, but chances are you won’t be visiting the Upside Down.

Only one person per tank. We have three float cabins, so you can throw your own float party and invite up to 2 other people to float simultaneously in our shop. Double-wide cabins do exist, and we may have one in the works!

You can get out anytime you wish. That said, the 90-minutes usually goes by waaaay faster than you’d expect (people report it felt like 30-45 minutes long).

John C. Lilly.

The first float tank was developed in 1954. These involved full submersion in water and a breathing device that completely covered your face. The first lay down, commercial tanks, pods and cabins were invented in the early 70’s.

Floating has been around for over 50 years and has oodles of published research to back it up. No mumbo or jumbo here.

No- your skin doesn’t even prune up, but it does become silky soft afterwards.

Nope. Some people fall asleep, but the water is so buoyant that you stay afloat. The worst that can happen is getting woken up by a bit of salt water in your eyes.

Yes. There seems to be a cumulative effect with consistent use of the tank. This is not documented by research, it is the users who know it is true. Relaxation is a learned art that needs practice.
